June Newsletter

June Newsletter

Hi Folks!

The Sicilian sun is getting warmer by the day! As June breaks forth over the Sicilian sunrise and as tourists flock to Sicily for the upcoming summer tourist season, I hope that my newsletter finds you well.

If you visit my website and check out our October 8 to 18th “Figghiu Beddu” trip to Sicily, you will see that we selected the beautiful Hellenia Yachting Hotel right across the street from Café Sikelia and all our friends! This will be a great trip and a lot of fun! So far, about half the spaces are reserved, but we still have space for you if you contact us! Here is the link to our trip where you can see images of the hotel, and all the things tha we will be doing! http://www.alfredzappala.com/travel.html

On a different note, I met with Donnamarie Kelly-Pignone this week at Babelonia Language School in Taormina to review with here the progress of the Sicilian Project’s Spring Programs, and to review with her the Sicilian project’s Fall Programs. She reported to me that five of our students will be taking the very rigorous Cambridge Standardized Test of the English Language, both written and oral versions. This is very important to us, because the first of our students are now fluent enough to take this rigorous exam…with more students in the pipeline who will be ready in the coming months! Truly, we are changing lives in Sicily and this is proof positive of our progress.

This summer, we will be offering two more programs in Taormina for high school students, one program in Taormina for elementary children, another program in Gaggi, and our Teacher Training Program for English teacher on a workshop basis. Truly, we are on the right path!

However, we have depleted our cash reserves for the fall Programs and we need to replenish immediately. Did you know that over 4,000 people receive this email on a regular basis? Did you know that if everyone donated a measly $10 each to the Sicilian project that we could fund the Sicilian Project for TWO YEARS? My view is this: instead of telling people how much you love Sicily, you must step to the plate and help us educate students in the English language. This is an important mission that we are doing, and a $10 contribution by you will help us achieve this goal. $10is equivalent to three Starbuck’s medium sized coffees or two Happy Meals at MacDonald’s, or six cannoli in the North End in Boston. How about it? It you read my newsletter, then you love Sicily. If you love Sicily, then a $10 donation will not break your bank. This I know!

Here is the link to the Sicilian project page on my website. At the bottom is a donation button. Please click it and donate!

http://www.alfredzappala.com/sicilianproject.html

By the way, we need a volunteer to help us with publicity (writing press releases, getting the word out about the Sicilian project etc.) and also some folks who will host fundraiser cocktail parties for us when I return to the states the end of Nove, ber…can you help out?

The Olive Tree Memorial

Roberto and I will be planting the last group of trees very soon for the summer, and if you would like to purchase a tree, then now is the time! This is a great thing to do, plus a portion of the purchase price gets donated to The Sicilian Project…a truly great thing o do!

The Old (Sicilian) Man
From My book “The Reverse Immigrant”

On a windy and rain-swept day, this morning I went to Acitrezza.

I feel the spirit of the ancient Greeks and Romans there. I see
the Greek ships from two thousand years ago as they approach the
rocky shoreline and imagine how many of them were hurled to their
demise against those unforgiving rocks.
Really, in this beautiful place, I bet there is a lot of sorrow too.
The people of this village have seen it all through the centuries,
this I know.

Tourism in the summer, desolation in the winter. The whole
gambit of things, I think.

God, what a beautiful place. A metaphor of Sicily: black and
white. Good and evil. Beauty and ugliness. The good and the bad.
Bountiful harvest and famine. Everything has happened here through
the millennia.

Today, it is deserted. I have it all to myself.

The rocks of the Cyclopes, which according to the legend were
hurled by Poliphemus at Ulysses after Ulysses had blinded him, jut out
of the water and loom large in the bay.

Shops and pizzerias now shuttered for the winter line the street
opposite the water.

Only the small fish shops are open, selling this morning’s catch
to the locals.

I wander around and smell the sea. Mystical.

From the deck of my new condo, with its panoramic view second
to none in all of Sicily, this morning as I had my coffee, I looked
out below and saw the tiny boats of the fishermen fight the sea’s
rage with many struggling to remain afloat.

I worried for them. For sure, I thought, someone would get
hurt today. That is why I went down to the water’s edge. I wanted to feel
the power of the waves.

Interestingly, I bumped into a man who was tending his small
shrimp skiff. The boat was no more that 15 feet long. He had that
weathered look…that Old Man of the Sea look. Tough eyes that had
seen everything in life, I guess.

Wearing a thick sweater, a slicker jacket and a cap pulled over one eye. I wished I had brought my camera to capture the moment.

We talked.

In my halting Sicilian, I asked if he has fished in the morning. He had. The tide had pulled the shrimp and squid close by, he said, so the catch was plentiful.

I asked about the waves. Wasn’t he afraid?

“U mari prima duna e poi pigghia!”

“The sea,” he said “first gives and then takes.”

Today it gave. Someday, but not today, it will take.

I continued down the street. That fisherman is very special, I think.

And brave. Braver than me, for sure.
